Packing Heat 099: Educate Yourself

Back Up Your Stuff

Yes, I know, I keep saying it. Seriously, do it. What if you lost weeks' and months' worth of work?

Mozy - has a free tier for home use

Carbonite - this service just saved my butt
ETA: Let me email you a special link if you decide to sign up for this and we'll both get a free month.

Time Machine - if you have a Mac, this comes with the operating system, you just need to tell it where to perform the backup

Personal MBA

How important is school? In some careers, you need those three letters after your name, but in others, you only need the knowledge. If what you need is the knowledge rather than the alphabet soup, you can certainly educate yourself.

Personal MBA website - business isn't necessarily boring. Check out the marketing stuff. We, as authors, need to know about this.

Lynda.com - I'm enraptured of this site. Try it for a month and see. They teach things like GarageBand, Word, and Google Docs. (I finally know how to insert a chart into Google Docs, something I could NOT figure out myself for the life of me.)

Writing Excuses - even though they are clearly talking to me and only me, you might vicariously learn something

Your Assignment

Determine which podcasts, blogs, etc. are only reiterating stuff you already know. Repetition isn't always bad, but it can keep you from stretching and learning. Subscribe to something you don't already know about and challenge yourself to grow.

I dunno...I was fairly certain the snotty remark Howard made about slashy vampires was aimed at Channeling Morpheus for Scary Mary ;-)
