New computer, hooray

I got my new office computer today and I'm so excited about it. The desktop it's replacing was a mass of wires that looked like Big Brother had been disemboweled all over the room. I now have a cute refurbished HP NC6220 that has a slightly bigger screen than my old laptop and is both thinner and lighter, and a bit faster. (Whoops, this pic is really big. Sorry.) And very few wires, just the power cable and the external speakers for playing iTunes.

I was transferring my documents on a USB drive, and at the last minute, before I wiped my old computer, I thought I might as well do one additional backup. (The old desktop computer's going to my sister in law and I don't think she appreciates the manlove. Not that she'd be judgemental. But it might be a weirdout moment.) Clare London's recent massive data loss was fresh in my mind, you see. So I found my external backup drive and did one more copy.

Holy crap, I'm glad I did. When I finally got set up enough to start working, my current document was not there. It was nowhere. But thankfully I found it in the external backup drive. It was a harrowing few minutes while I got that drive fired up and opened it up. (And then it was partitioned so the first partition I looked in didn't have the backup in there at all. Luckily I soon remembered I'd tried to be fancy a few years ago and partitioned it so it shows up on a windows box as two different drives!)

I have a little HP netbook and we're getting along okay. It's mainly for reading ebooks on though, being as I couldn't get an e-reader.

Partitioning hard drives is a great idea. I have the desk top one partitioned into 3, one bit for Windows (so if it crashes, I don't lose everything and it's relatively easy to fix), one for downloads so that if a virus gets in, it only infects there and the last bit for my stuff. Works very well.

Hope you and the new pc get on well.

I think that was why I partitioned the drive, to protect it from data loss. I'd heard that if the drive tanks, you can take it to a pro and they might be able to recover one of the partitions.

I totally need to back up/archive my big art computer now! Its hard drive is 75% full! But seeing how easy it was to do my writing computer makes me think it's a task I can do in like an hour.

PS Andy and I can't wait for you to get your Wii!

Yay! For new computers and not losing your current document!

It wasn't just any old 11k, either. It was 11k of a 15k novellette. So basically almost the whole damn project!! I'm beyond relieved.
