The lesson I learned today was that the fine folks at my local post office really love to open everyone's mail. I wasn't entirely surprised. Once I went there to drop off packages and SAW the blonde chick opening someone else's mail and logging the contents in a 3-ring binder.

But when I got that "postage due: $4.95" envelope in my mailbox, my heart filled with dread.

Because I have been known to mail books to my readers at the Media Mail rate with...gasp...BOOKMARKS IN THEM.

Yes, I know. Next thing you know I'll be running a prostitution ring meth lab.

So when I got my book today that had a promo item in with it, I just said, "Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh," and paid my five bucks. Because I was so friggin' glad it wasn't ME who was busted. For daring to slip a little weightless something extra in with my book.

As far as I know, the folks at the post office where I keep my PO box are nowhere near as gleeful about wielding the packing knife. But it's best to play it safe.

The long road to super-villainy begins with one small bookmark.
