Worth the chill

Yes, it's July and therefore summer here, but I was still a bit iffy about going lake swimming seeing as how it can take a while for things to really warm up in Wisconsin. But we got there and I thought, well, I'm here, I might as well. And it was hideously cold as I stepped in, but eventually I adjusted and inched out a bit farther, and a bit farther. And once my butt was wet, I figured I might as well start swimming.

In my work-in-progress, I was concerned that I might not be conveying my love-interest's characterization well enough. He's a hunting and fishing kinda guy who lives in the middle of nowhere, so since I was also in the middle of nowhere (and the middle of a lake) I thought I'd try communing with him. I stared off into the treeline and tried to picture it as his land, not a state park. A place where he was at home.

And then an eagle flew out of the trees, and I thought (as him), "I would never leave this place."

How awesome!

Also I was ready to leave by the time someone showed up with screaming kids. Bonus! >;-D

Off topic, but I've been stalking Changeling's coming soon page and noticed that the SO4: Swarm is up :)

It says the author is Selena Illyria. Is that a mistake or are you allowing another author to write in the Channeling Morpheus universe? I couldn't find any info on your site.

How funny! No, that's just a typo. I'm not quite done with Swarm yet but it will indeed be me who writes it it. SO4 should be out in August and SO5 in September.

LOL. Phew. Thanks for the clarification. I knew it was probably just a slip-up but I had to check anyway because it's not all that unusual. I think Carol Lynne does it with her Cattle Valley universe, so I just wondered if that was what was happening with the Channeling Morpheus universe XP

I've been toying with the idea of a universe where another writer could possibly hop in, but Channeling Morpheus sure isn't that universe, ha ha! No, I'm too enmeshed with these guys to let anyone else play with them.

Oh, I'll mention that mix-up to the folks who can fix it. Se has a really different writing style than Jordan does -- I couldn't imagine her writing Michael and Wild Bill. From the stories I've read of Se's, she does write some pretty hot sex scenes, though. I think I've either proofed or line edited nearly half the stories on the coming soon page. I usually average a couple of proofreading jobs a week.

Jordan -- glad you had a nice trip to the park. It sounds like it must be beautiful there.

I'm tickled to hear you're getting all that work! Go you!

What's the difference between proofing and line editing? I've always used them interchangeably.

We do live in a really pretty area -- not overpopulated either, which is nice. I hate being out in nature and listening to other people yell. It kills the mood.

Well, with Changeling, the line editing is considerably more involved. You check on a number of things with the formatting that you don't have to worry about when you're at the proofreading stage. You double-check on consistency with the previous books in a series, consistency if it's a multi-author series, look for things like headhopping, repetition, wording, logic -- much more to do with content than just what you do for proofreading. You proofread the story again in the line edit, and make sure everything in the labeling and blurb is correct.

What I did for you in the stories that hadn't previously been published was really a mix of proofreading and editing. You did all the formatting.

There's nothing like getting into your art! Too bad about the screaming kids, but that's all part of life, isn't it? The thing I like about fiction is that it DOESN'T have to be part of life, right? Can't wait to see what you're working on now!

It was funny because when we got there, there was this annoying group there and I said, "I wish they would leave," and they did! I'm surprised I swam for an hour...right about when I was ready to come out, the yelping child family showed up, and it was time for us to go get some dinner anyway. I felt sorta magical :D

I can't wait to show off what I've been working on!
