Interesting distinctions

I'm looking at my Netflix recommendations and I see they have the stuff they think I would like categorized in a way I never really considered. Obviously, horror pops up first for me. (I know, you thought it was romantic comedies where the dumb blonde chick saves the day and there's a schmoopy wedding at the end. Oh, and a baby.)

Not just horror, though. Exciting Horror. As opposed to psychological or atmospheric, I guess. Scroll down a little, what else is there based on what I've watched recently: Scary Action and Adventure.

I think that is a really good description of what I like. Categories like "Dialog doesn't suck" or "No CGI characters taking screen time from live actors" would be useful too.

The last movie I watched was The Host (in Korean) and I just loved it!

The Host was really good! I thought it was a good mix of live actors and CGI (which I admit I very much enjoy)."

I think I didn't really explain what it is about CGI I dislike -- cos I thought the CGI in The Host rocked!

I hate it when CGI characters have big, climactic emotional scenes dedicated solely to them. Smeagol is the main example of this. I wanted to look at hot actors, not frame after frame of CGI-Smeagol's inner emotional life.

A more recent example was the last Hulk remake. Loved it when they were initially obscuring the CGI Hulk with shadows, mists and elusive camera angles -- but once they zeroed in on his face and tried to show emotions fleeting past, I didn't care for it any more.

The way The Host did it was spot-on! Especially the scenes with the kids.

Now, I'm not usually one for horror fics, but Pumpkinhead was just about the greatest thing...the best creature EVER in a movie. To me, a real horror fic would be one based on a true story of rape and/or murder. Can't get any more horrible than that...

Oh, cool. I think I saw that years ago, but a good horror flick always bears re-watching ;-)

Oh I watched The Host. I can't imagine why because even though I read horror, I can't watch it at all. The visuals give me nightmares. I really can't figure out this paradox... Oh well.

I had to look away when they were going to perform a lobotomy on that guy who was quarantined. Was it really lobotomy? I don't know, because I had to look away. But gosh, that freaked me out.

Ugh, wasn't that the freakiest part! That character was so sympathetic. The scene cut away before the drill hit. He didn't seem too adversely affected by the surgery, though. They must've tapped something he wasn't using ;-)
