So this was unexpected awesomeness. We were driving back from the "Birthday Town" (if you subscribed to JCP News, you'd know what that meant) and we came across a state park that was big enough that the door was probably staffed, and we could buy our 2009 vehicle admission stickers. We live down the street from a park, but we never seem to show up when there's a ranger in the hut. And, we reasoned, this big park might take credit cards.

We drove up to the building and the ranger said sure, but we'd have to come inside. We entered the ranger station, and lo and behold, the building was chock-full of taxidermied animals.

Score!

See, I'd been thinking of using taxidermy in my next Partners in Crime, since Mr. Lanyon tells me he'd like a museum setting to be one of the themes. So there I was, up close and personal, with foxes, beaver, a badger (of course, this is Wisconsin) owls, coyote, and the biggest honkin' opossum I'd ever seen. But the best part was, I got to grill the ranger about taxidermied animal care.

How cool is that???

That's great!
What a fun way to do research, to see it in person and be able to grill someone about it.
I'm still trying to figure out a way to fly to Hawaii for research purposes ;o)
And a very Happy Birthday to you!

Ooh, I'd love to do some research in NZ, for that matter.

Taxidermied animals freak me right out, along with pinned insects.

Ooh, I saw a diorama full of pinned insects just last week. They were so perfect they looked fake and jewel-like.

Hey you ever want to know how to disarticulate and re-articulate a small animal skeleton let me know...as someone who grew up digging in my grandmother's freezer pushing aside the carcasas of African Grays, Hawks and burrowing owls (no she dind't kill them...) to get at the popsicles.
