How are italics and bold indicated in professionally formatted .txt files?

*bold* and _underline/italic_

(I will take html, too, but PDF is so inflexible, it's often a nightmare to read, and don't get me started on proprietory formats)

I use a Sony Reader (omg love) and its format is .lrf but I have never found that for sale other than through Sony (I suspect it's proprietary.) Therefore, I buy PDF and convert. HTML will also convert easily to just about any format for any reader, I believe.

I could see how HTML would be flexible and flowable, but still allow you to have formatting like bold or italics. HTML is the basis for making a mobi or a kindle file.

I would love an ebook reader. I got an eee hoping to read ebooks on it, but the darn thing gets too hot. And it's easier to just get paper books from my day job at the public library

I also have a few in .txt for reading on my PDA. Some of the PDFs don't tranlate well into the Adobe for a Palm.

Do you use mobi files for your Palm, too?

I have a PDA and my preference is .prc (mobi). Or palm reader .pdb
pdf files sometimes do not fit the screen and makes it a bit difficult to read.

I read e-books on my computer and prefer either MSreader(lit) or eReader(pdb). If the choice is between a PDF or an HTML file, I prefer an HTML file.
