You'd think a book cover is a book cover is a book cover. But I was browsing a collection of notable literary/memoir covers and it was stunningly apparent that what flies in one genre would cause bafflement in another. I'd be surprised if any of these did well in Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy.

I think this one was my favorite. It reminded me of 1940's propaganda posters, was very simple, and had spiffy typography.

And some trompe l'oeil that caught my eye:

(Here's a quickie definition of trompe l'oeil) Trompe-l'œil (French for "deceive the eye", pronounced [tʁɔ̃p lœj]) is an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions. More at Wikipedia

I was super intrigued by this one, but I wonder if others like it. There's a visceral reaction to having type "disturbed" -- my last cover art post got some strong pushback on the cover for Promise of Shadows.

I like these. They're less cluttered and more imaginative than the run-of-the-mill genre cover.

I like the first two covers, but am not fond of the third, having to pause longer to read the title. However, I didn't have that problem with "Promise of Shadows", so I assume it was the fold and repetition of some letters in the lefthand example that bothered me, not the somewhat occluded lettering.

I enjoy covers that are different than two guys standing together or a scene of the ocean, a mountain or a sultry terrain. But a good cover can get to me, no doubt.

The first one makes me think of Film Noir tbh...it would be enough to get me to pick up the book and read the blurb. And I agree, with lawless, they are less cluttered, there's more of a clean, simple feel to them but yeah, I don't see them as genre covers at all LOL.
