Last night at my writing group, I asked the gang what they thought about personal mission statements. With writing, motivation is really a huge part of the puzzle, and as with anything in life, it's easy for goals to shift, for targets to become blurry. In essence, it's super common to lose sight of why you do what you do.

I've always had a drive to make stuff. No doubt there are fancier ways I could say that, but at the core, the statement is very easy to understand, isn't it? I like making stuff. And I especially like seeing other people digging the stuff I make. It's satisfying. Imagine cooking a fantastic new recipe. It's a lot more fun to have a friend squee over it with you than it is to just eat it yourself.

When I was trying to articulate what it is that brings me satisfaction, it occurred to me I had a slogan at some point but couldn't remember when or where. I just found it -- it's on JCPbooks.com, where I used to sell my books direct, where I now just have information and links about my books. Ah, the shifting sands of publishing and ecommerce! Here it is:

Weird and wonderful ebooks you'll want to read again and again!

The "weird and wonderful" ebooks speaks to my desire to create things that people have never seen before. Yeah, everything under the sun has already been done, but it's totally possible to add a twist or a flavor that's new. And the re-read...well, I really can't think of any higher compliment than a reader chosing to re-invest their time in a story I've written.

...I also get a big charge out of knowing someone has skipped work because they couldn't put my book down. So if that ever happens to you, be sure to tell me, it'll make my day :D

Skipped work
Oh yes, I skipped a bunch of work when I discovered the PsyCop series. I still remember skipping work to go to park and read Ghost TV on a sunny day, that was a good day. 😀

While I haven't missed work, I have gone to work bleary eyed because I stayed up all night reading a new PsyCop book that I couldn't put down. Or I stayed up all night rereading one of your books for the umpteenth time. No matter how many times I reread your stories, I still enjoy them just as much (if not more) than the first time around.

Hope that didn't come off as creepy, I just really enjoy reading well written, well crafted books. :)

Next time, call in and say you have diarrhea. I've never heard of anyone being challenged over that.

(I'm bummed because I planned to do that at my last day job at some point and never got around to using the excuse.)

Ooh what a great post!! And I love your slogan! It fits you and your writing perfectly :D As for skipping work, no, but I have stayed up late WAY too late reading your stuff LOL.

I've missed my stop on the tube more than once, reading your books. (I commute by tube, and usually have a really good "my stop look up" reflex, so I only do this when I'm really engrossed!)

Uh oh, make sure you don't end up in a scary neighborhood doing that! xoxo

I probably should've skipped work, because I gave myself migraine due to lack of sleep. Spook Squad was worth it. ;)

Noooo! No migraines allowed!

I haven't skipped work...yet but I'be definitely been late...very late for work because I had to finish the next chapter.I've definitely stayed captive in the bathroom because I needed to finish a chapter or four before granting other family members access, lol. And, I've pulled a few all nighters because I couldn't put Psy Cop down.

Woo-hoo, all nighters!

My eyes really balk at me when I'm super tired no matter how good a book is. Very wimpy of them.
