2000 words of garbage

I guess I should be glad that it doesn't happen to me more often. I wrote a scene that took me all day (with a little break to re-hook-up our satellite, which isn't working well, and BOY was that fun) and as I lay down in bed later on, I realized it sucked. It would need a total rewrite; a tweak wouldn't do it.

It was just...lame. If I were to summarize it, I'd say, "My character meets with someone he hasn't seen for 15 years and is really nervous, and some people argue." I mean, the action part of it was just *blah*.

When I have this much trouble, I know I can kickstart something by writing longhand and giving myself an assignment. So my assignment was, "Write ten different ways to handle that scene." Believe me, ten seems like an awful lot when you're on number three, and you think you're totally tapped out. By number seven or eight, I thought, OK, OK, I've proved my point. I can stop now. But since I can't NOT finish something when I'm so close, I kept on going.

And I realized my idea #10 totally rocked. (My guy stops in the bathroom on his way to the friend's office. The friend is washing his face. He doesn't recognize his friend until his friend speaks and asks for a towel.)

I guess I needed those 2000 throwaway words to practice with the friend, since he was new to me, to get his voice down, and think about how he felt about the reunion.

***In other news: OMG, PsyCop 4 coming out tomorrow! Yay!***

Sounds like idea #10 is a good one. Actually I like that whole idea of tackling a scene 10 different ways.

So PsyCop4! Woohoo can't wait! Is it coming out in eBook tomorrow only or actually book format as well?

There were actually a few good ones in there. The funny thing was, I'd think, "OK, this is good, I can stop now." But for some reason, my favorite one turned out to be the one that came to me *after* I figured I was tapped out.

Tomorrow is the eBook release, and then at the end of the month it'll come out in paper, bound with Body & Soul, kind of like the first two PsyCops.

Good for me, bad for my friend in Australia ;o)
She'll have to wait patiently for me to send it to her and I'll have to keep my mouth shut and not tell her anything.
I can't wait to read it, I've been reading the series again in preparation for next book. And I still love them :o)
May. 31st, 2008 12:22 pm (UTC)
I wonder if she can order from LuLu in Australia? I'm not sure how that'll work.

I can't tell you how excited it makes me that you're GEARING UP for PsyCop 4! I'm going to go brag to my boyfriend!

I've been waiting for it. I love the stories and I love the characters and can't wait to find out what's in store for them next. I still want to know more about Camp Hell lol And I do think Crash needs a fella. But that's just me. PsyCop & The Adrien English series are the M/M stories I read the most. They are just that damn good. So go brag you've earned it.

My friend probably could order from LuLu but eBooks not her thing or mine either but i print them out.I probably shouldn't be telling you that lol. I just can't read that much on the computer screen. So I send them to her when they are in book format.

And I peeked at the other comments and now I want to know... 3somes with Crash? One little tidbit.. a fan in the middle of nowhere New York and somewhere in Australia would love to know ;o)

Thanks for telling me about your reading habits! (OMG, I totally don't care if you print it out)

Knowing this makes me think that I'll try to make book 5 come out in print and ebook at the same time.

Right now I'm facing a learning curve with print-on-demand through Amazon, so I thought I'd give myself a month to figure it out.

My lips are sealed about Crash though. OK, I can't resist...he shows a little skin in this story :D

I glad you don't mind that I print it out. It is just for my reading pleasure not for profit.

It's a tough call. I like print books right away but I love the way PsyCop is set up with the two stories in one book.

OK, I can't resist...he shows a little skin in this story :D
Ugh! Tease ;o)
So when exactly does the book come out? 12:01 EST? *Has credit card ready*
And you know I won't sleep until I've read it now and know what Crash is up to lol
May. 31st, 2008 11:46 pm (UTC)
LOL, I just put it live. It's 10:30 pm here, so I'm sure it's tomorrow somewhere. I'll do a big announcement in the morning :D

It'll be here: stores.lulu.com/jcprice
May. 31st, 2008 11:51 pm (UTC)
Woohoo! Printing now. Sleep is overrated anyway ;o)
May. 31st, 2008 11:55 pm (UTC)
Awesomeness! You're my very first customer! I hope you enjoy it! :D
May. 31st, 2008 11:58 pm (UTC)
Yay! I'm the first :o)
And I saw the title to the next one on the last page and I can't wait for that one either.
Jun. 1st, 2008 06:59 am (UTC)
Yay! I get goosebumps from the title of #5. I've been dying to write this for a long time now, but the time had to be right.

***In other news: OMG, PsyCop 4 coming out tomorrow! Yay!*** OMG YAY indeed! Crash behaves himself, right? Cuz if there's threesomes or cheating, I'd rather not read it. *getting more old-fashioned by the day!wuss*
May. 31st, 2008 12:07 pm (UTC)
I'll send you a private email :)
May. 31st, 2008 12:14 pm (UTC)
Oh dear, now I'm scared. Although I'm trying to tell myself that it's just because you don't want to spoil people. :S Anyway, I appreciate it :) And I'll try not to post more or less out of the blue comments in other people's journals when I'm drunk. Probably a good rule to live by lol
May. 31st, 2008 12:17 pm (UTC)
LOL, you have that posting-when-drunk problem too? I'm so pleased I'm not the only one!

I sent you the email :D
May. 31st, 2008 05:50 pm (UTC)
OMG I totally have that problem, too! :)

Which addy did you send it to? LJ seems to be eating a lot of my emails lately :(( Could you maybe send it again? seanmegansean at googlemail dot com -- that would rock :)
May. 31st, 2008 11:57 am (UTC)
I so know this one. Don't you hate when you look at something and go, ... UGH. LIMP.

That is a great exercise, though. I'm going to remember it. :) 2000 words feels like a lot when you're blocked but it's really not that much when you're on a roll (at least for me, who can blow 2k on a sex scene and snuggling).
May. 31st, 2008 12:09 pm (UTC)
2k words is a lot to have to toss for me. I'm not the world's fastest writer, so it was a whole day's work. I guess what matters is the final result! 2k words of boring are still boring.

I guess it's better than losing 2k fabulous words to a computer crash or something :-/
May. 31st, 2008 12:15 pm (UTC)
I hate losing work to a computer crash. Because it's GONE. :( I have such a phobia abbout it.
May. 31st, 2008 12:18 pm (UTC)
No kidding! I should go back everything up on a flash drive right this second. (My PsyCop eye icon is having a staring contest with your rainbow eye icon, hee hee)
May. 31st, 2008 12:25 pm (UTC)
*laughs* I was noticing that. :)

I use Google Documents to back up my work, or I email myself my work.
May. 31st, 2008 01:43 pm (UTC)
Yay! More psycop! You've really got me hooked on this series. But how will I have the dicipline not to buy it tomorrow? I have a test on swedish tax laws next week. This will not help. ;)
May. 31st, 2008 03:04 pm (UTC)
I'll think about your exam the next time I'm having trouble falling asleep ;-)

I haven't been in school for ages now, but sometimes I have to go to all-day workshops, and I'm usually collapsing by the end of the day. (Then, if it's in another city, I also have to drive home once it's all over.) Last seminar I went to, I bought an "energy" under-the-tongue spray that was caffeine and B-vitamins. It was pretty awesome! I would say it provided alertness, rather than energy, but alertness was what I needed at the time.

It tastes too nasty to get hooked on, though.
May. 31st, 2008 04:44 pm (UTC)
LOL, the strange thing is that I've found tax law, pretty fun. In fact, I haven't had one class that's been boring yet. Very hard, yes. But not boring. And I was the girl who had a hard time not falling asleep in high school. Of all the things I've done in my life, I never thought I'd end up doing this!
Jun. 1st, 2008 03:14 am (UTC)
I just bought it. I'm so excited!!!

And the title of the next novel sounds good too. I can't wait to find out about that part of Victor's past! You've been keeping us in the dark with only hints and clues for like... 3 books now (at least).

By the way, I like the new logo for your name.

Will go read now since I'm just rambling... I'm so psyched!
Jun. 1st, 2008 07:02 am (UTC)
You guys are all so good about not putting a spoiler in for book 5 ;-)

I've been dropping hints and clues from the very beginning, so it's really good to finally have some payoff . Thanks for noticing my spiky heart logo! I figured I needed something to put where publishers usually put their name or logo.
