Writing Rituals. Got any?

I'm reading and enjoying Around the Writer's Block: Using Brain Science to Solve Writer's Resistance by Rosanne Bane. I used to say that I didn't think writer's block existed. But these days I think it's a pretty good shorthand for times when writers can't get themselves into the proper headspace to write.

In her chapter Rituals and Routines, Bane says that neurons responsible for two different types of experiences or behavoirs will group up and fire at the same time if the two behaviors are done simultaneously often enough. So, if you ate a lemon drop every time you wrote, eventually the taste of a lemon drop would begin triggering the "ready to write" parts of your brain.

Do you have any rituals or routines you always engage in? For me it seems to be a shower to put me to sleep. Which is weird, since showers wake other people up in the morning. However I find that when I'm traveling with others, no one else really wants the shower at night so it works out well.

I'd love to adopt a simple writing ritual. Probably not lemon drops. Cos I'd just sit here and eat them all.

When I'm under deadline, I always write first thing in the morning. Otherwise, I just need a cup of coffee or tea next to me and good tunes on my iPod.

I'm pretty attached to the morning as my main creative time too.

OOoh I shower at night too, because I like lounging around in my pjs in the evening. And you're right, when traveling, everyone else seems to prefer the morning so it def makes things easy.

As for writing ritual...huh, I don't think I have one, I wish I did, you're right, maybe it might make things easier *sigh*

I stuck a bottle of cardamom bitters on my desk. Hopefully I can remember to start sniffing it when I'm in the writing flow :D

Oooh now that is an interesting idea...because, as you probably know, smell is the strongest sense memory. What are cardamom bitters? Just the spice?

and I've never found anything good to make with it. I tried it with club soda and it made it taste like ucky medicine :D

Hi it's Kate Pavelle. So... mornings are good. My favorite living room chair, with FLOWERS on the window. Something to drink. I have a special writing coffee mug I got from another writer (Dana Stabenow) few years ago. It developed a crack, so I bought a similar one from Cafe Press and had her bless it online. And silence. No music, thank you. Football in the next room is okay, because it makes no sense anyhow.

I like the olfactory idea, and I wonder if coffee does that for me.
