Night Swim

So, here I am, missing the UK Meet. Such a bummer, but I just moved last week. My move was more complicated than I thought, the cats aren't quite acclimated, and I tend to move only once every 10-15 years, so I know I made the right decision. Still, it stinks knowing I'm missing all the fun in Manchester.

Anyway, to take the sting off not-being in England, I've been swimming. My new pad is in an apartment complex with a big, gorgeous swimming pool. At first I thought I'd need to just grin and bear all the rambunctious kids. And then yesterday on a whim I went down an hour before the pool closed, and it was pretty much empty. So night-swimming it is! It seems like the heat of the day's been building up for hours at that point and it feels fantastic to hop in and get my core temperature down. Plus I'll sleep like a log.

More about my move in Monday's newsletter. Sign up here if you'd like to get on the mailing list!

We moved last Saturday and the kitties aren't quite acclimated yet, either. At least it's better than the first couple days, when neither of them ate and spent most of their time hiding. May wanted to play fetch today, which I thought was a very good sign indeed!

Mine reacted opposite the way I thought they would. Puffy, who normally takes things in stride, hid. Now he thinks the gap beside the couch is his secret Puff-cave. Frankie, who's a scaredy cat, was like, "Awesome! New place! Look at that window! Woo hoo!" and owned the place immediately. His new trick is, "Nyah nyah, now I'm in the hall." One day he'll meet a dog out there and then we'll see who's smug.

Chaos loved to do the "Nyah Nyah" hall thing at the old place - hasn't here yet, fortunately. I'm sure it's just a matter of time...

I did pick up some new furniture for the new place and am writing this from my new purple chaise lounge. :D

UGH we're still in the middle of our move. Our stuff will be delivered in a week. Hubs is at the house sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor while the kid and I are with family. Seems like we've both been doing the same stress relief. My stepsis has a pool and we've been swimming there.

I"m with you - so bummed about missing the UK Meet I really hope I can go next year, but I guess we'll see.

Glad to hear your move went okay, good luck with the cats.

If I ever move internationally I'll have to get the lowdown from you as to what to expect...cos it seems like your stuff has been gone forever. I still have a few odds and ends to pick up because I ran out of boxes at the last minute. I kinda got overwhelmed and wasn't functioning at 100% toward the end of the move.

I would definitely help you :D We actually were notified about two weeks ago that our stuff was Stateside and did we want it delivered, but hubs was still in RI at school and had three weeks of turnoever and change of command to deal with still so we opted for temporary storage until all that was over. Just made more sense for us to wait.

And UGH overwhelmed is not good, I know the feeling and even after moving so many times, there's always things I think I could have done better to prepare LOL.

I hear ya on the "I could have prepared better" sentiment. It's interesting to see all my stuff, and note the areas in which I accumulate too much. I'm trying to shift my mindset from accumulation to using up in those areas. In general I'm trying to live a lot lighter now so hopefully any moves in my distant future would be less painful. Getting rid of some things implies a sort of defeat, like a craft project you never finished, for instance.

And then there are things like old notebooks that I have no idea what to do with. I think about scanning it all so I can toss the physical objects...and my gut seizes up and I think, nah. Way too much work.

Then I think, "If I were moving to Australia, would I pay someone to ship this over?" and the answer is, probably not.

That last line - helped LOADS three years ago when we were prepping for the move to Germany - we offloaded a LOT of stuff.

Now coming back, to the land of technology and things that were just starting when we left - like Netflix - we culled our DVD collection - tossing movies (well donating) ones we'd only watched once with the thought - if we ever really want to watch it again - we can catch it on Netflix. That thought process has also changed our buying habits which is a good thing.

But yes, the stuff /o\ I have tons of photos that I should get into albums (so glad digital was finally invented LOL) and a baby book I never did :((( And I agree, when you finally let go of something that you realize is never going to happen, it is a bit like defeat.

And yes, each move for us is a learning process and each time we trim the fat and get better.

Are you closer to Madison now? I'm planning a trip down there in the nearish future, any chance you want to grab beers and hang out and chat with a wanna be author/vampire/cat lady? ^__~

Sooooo envious of your pool, I want one so bad!

Missed you at Manchester (I just got back home from it an hour ago.) Never mind, 2014's will be here before we know it, I'm sure.

I'm jealous of your swimming pool. It's been so warm here that there were several times this weekend I'd have loved to dive in a nice cool pool. And night swimming sounds very cool in every sense.

I was really looking forward to seeing you again :(

You're right though, it's scary how quickly time slips by.

I feel for you regarding the move. There was a period in my life where in 2 years I moved over 6 times. The kitties would see me start to bring home boxes from the liquor store and I could literally hear them hissing "oh no, not THIS SH*T again." And my littlest one YEOWLED for five hours straight on the drive from NYC to DC, and then five hours straight on the drive when I moved back.

I lived in my current apartment for about ten years, and I swear to god I will never move again.

But good luck in your new digs! It's in the 90s here in NYC right now and I am totally envying you your pool.

Oh no, poor poor kitties. At the tail end of my time in Chicago I moved 4 times in about 4 years, ugh. I didn't have pets then.

I've been swimming too lately--at the local YMCA.

Cats are weird. I adopted Muffing as an older cat and she's a little neurotic. When I took her home she hid in a corner behind furniture for a week. And then one night she came out and sat down next to me on the couch.

Have you thought of putting out some catnip?

Catnip might be fun. The one who really likes it is the one who adjusted right away, you know how that goes.

Missed you in Manchester! I'm envying you the pool - I've been home an hour and stuck on the sunny-side of a train with no air-con for over four hours before that...

Oh ugh, how can they have no AC on the train? I missed you too, I was really looking forward to seeing you again :(

I've figured out that I can now hire a cat sitter instead of boarding the cats, so when I travel it will be less disruptive and cheaper. Basically I used to live somewhere nobody was willing to drive, which was why home repairs sucked so much too.

You're new place has a pool? That's pretty darn awesome!

It was one of the top things I was looking for. Bringing the cats with me was non-negotiable. The pool was more like, "I really hope I don't have to go without."
