Your Update is Being Installed...

The very large, very old iMac that I thought was going to die two years ago finally bit the dust. I thought if I needed a new graphics card, it was a matter of the repairman popping one in. Alas, it’s soldered to the motherboard and it’s not cost-effective to replace.

I took a look at how many hours a day I spend seated, and I’ve been keen on using my standing desk again, where the now-dead computer was in residence. The standing desk has fallen by the wayside, which I can tell by the way the room seemed to clutter up while I wasn’t looking. I don’t want to move my big graphics computer there, since it’s impractical to stand while I’m working on graphics. But since I’ve got a billion computers, I figured I’d set up something else for now.

There’s a part in one of the early PsyCop stories where Vic starts his crappy laptop and it downloads updates for half an hour. Well, evidently I’m using Vic’s laptop now. Not only did it download updates for half an hour last night, but this morning I accidentally uninstalled Scrivener when I meant to be uninstalling the old beta versions of the program…and then it effing updated anti-virus for another half hour. AAAAGH.

I think it’s done now. One can only hope.

I remember those updates, not fondly ;)

It's working fine now. Fingers crossed it's smooth sailing from here on out.

LOL! You sure brought back that scene. And Crash setting up the chat program unbeknownst to Vic.

Poor Vic! Just not a computer guy.

Updates are Hell.

I think if I were a multitasker it wouldn't be so bad. But I think my productivity hinges on me NOT being a multitasker.

I believe several studies have shown that humans are terrile multitaskers. All the people who say they're great at it in employment interviews? Wrong. :-)

Plus it's nothing to brag about, either.

Exactly. "I can do a bunch of stuff simultaneously--badly." Big deal. Show me you can do one thing well.

But businesses love to perpetuate this fallacy--that multitasking is admirable, or even possible.

Sorry to hear your Mac finally died :( And OH they make standing desks??? I should look into this - I might like that as well - any suggestions? LOLL at a billion computers - my husband and I did a count and we have seven computers /o\ now one is the dead one that we haven't gotten rid of yet, so really only six working computers LOL. But we are going to offload two of the older working computers with this move and cull the crop so to speak LOL.

UGH those updates - mine did that not too long ago - those updates are annoying and since my laptop has McAfee - inevitably that update requires a restart AFTER the windows update - just about the time I get everything back up and running again >:(

DOUBLE UGH that you uninstalled Scrivener :( Does that mean you lost some of your work???

Anyway, here's hoping it's all done.

Right now I have a dresser that's just the right height for a standing desk for me. I became accustomed to typing/standing while working at the library and working the front desk, where there's no way you could sit, you'd just be jumping up all the time.

If you're buying new, I believe they make desks that can be raised and lowered so you can both stand and sit at them. I would look into that for myself in the future, I'd love the flexibility.

No work at all lost, I suppose I should count myself lucky. It was the program itself I uninstalled, after I installed it the night before over the beta versions. I'm guessing I was looking at a bunch of shortcuts and thinking they were programs. When I hit "uninstall Scrivener Beta 1.7" it uninstalled the only scrivener on the PC, the real one. I'm not surprised, I don't know my way around a PC with any level of confidence.

Oh that's cool that you already have something you can use. And yeah, I can definitely see why working in a library would make you grow accustomed to standing.

I just checked and WOW are they expensive, I'm going to have to do more research LOL. Or wait...

I'm glad you didn't lose any work. I know sometimes when a program is uninstalled you lose work, so I'm really happy that didn't happen.

And huh, you seem pretty techno knowledgeable to me :D

Oh ugh, your parents' computer situation isn't one I think I could live with. I have half a mind to just ditch the virus protection altogether since I don't download random things or click on dubious links...but then caution wins out.

It WILL be nice to have a zippy new box. YAY!

Totally OT but...the local convenience store asks you to donate a dollar every time you go in for March of Dimes. You write your name on a little Easter egg decal and they post them all over the store.

I donated but didn't want to put my own name. I put "Vic." The next time, I put "Jacob."

Aw! That's just...aaaawww!

Your OTs are always riveting.

And how does that room clutter up when we're not looking? Mine does that, too! Strange and creepy how it seems to be happening in two such different corners of the country. Perhaps we should warn others. Hmmm.

Someone must be breaking into my house and cluttering up that room. It's the only logical explanation. Either that or I'm sleepwalk-cluttering.
