The spam on my LJ is really out of control, despite me locking it all down and requiring a captcha, which I know is a pain in the ass to my legitimate commenters. I realized that there are a handful of old posts they seem to be focusing on and I finally got the idea to lock down the comments on those...is there anything else I can be doing?

(I love my new icon...it makes it seem like I'm annoyed with everything.)

Well, you can friends lock your journal, that way you choose who can access it, but with you being an author and this your tool to promote stuff, that's kinda impractical
You might be able to block their IPs, but I'm not sure how you do that, I've never blocked a user
Sorry the spam is getting out of control

You're right, friends locking defeats the purpose. I think it also wouldn't post to amazon and GR for me either if I did that.

I think they just get new IP addresses anyway. It's so frustrating.

I see there is a comments by registred users only in my settings, that would mean if you block someone, they would need to create a new account in order to comment again, that might wear them down eventually, too much hassle

I have a few readers who reply regularly without accounts, though, so I feel like I'd be blocking them. Maybe locking the targeted posts has helped. I haven't had any spams between our last few comments.

I has gotten quite out of control. Though, right now they seem to be focusing on pre-2006 posts of mine, so it's not really anything I'm worried anyone other than me will see, I just go to the post and mark the comment as spam with each one.

So you see a pattern too. (A different pattern than me, though.) I see three or four specific posts from 2011-2012 targeted.

Whatever it takes...
I don't mind the captcha, and if I have to jump through more hoops, I'll gladly do it. Would it help if you stopped allowing Anon comments? A lot of people don't, and I don't know if that's to prevent spam or not.

As much as I appreciate being able to comment anonymously (sort of), I'd figure out a way if it would keep some of the spam from getting through.

Re: Whatever it takes...
I'd be sad if you (and my pal Kendall who also posts anonymously) couldn't chat with me, which is why I left the ability to anonymously comment on. Can you post from a twitter or FB account? I might just have to do that if locking the spam-target posts doesn't ultimately help :(

Re: Whatever it takes...
I could probably even sign up for a LJ account, depending on how much info they make you publish. I had a stalker in college, and I've been overly cautious ever since.

I tried using Twitter, but it said LJ would be able to update my profile. O.O Does that mean they can change my info? Maybe I'm just paranoid...does anyone know exactly what they mean by that?

Oh, ugh, waaaay better to err on the side of caution in this circumstance.

I know that on Facebook I rarely sign up for apps because they all have language that says they can post stuff on our timeline or post stuff on our behalf, and that seems too risky to me.

I don't know about the cross-updating with Twitter and LJ, I think I just blithely synched that up without looking at it too hard.

I finally disables all anon commenting. I hate that, but it was getting out of hand. Using CAPTCHA seemed to actually INCREASE the spam.

I'm still getting some, but they have to make LJ accounts now, so it has decreased a lot. Hopefully I can restore anon commenting soon. Spam was getting on my nerves.

That's interesting, I thought the spam seemed to get worse after I added CAPTCHA too, but I figured it was just an overall increase.

I'll see how often I'm dealing with the spam comments and use that to decide whether to close anonymous commenting. Most of them are anonymous.

On my writing journal I only get anon comments, so I couldn't turn those off. I just screen all anon comments and go in once a week or so to clean them out and unscreen the ones that can stay. Time-consuming pain in the arse. >:(

I am currently reading Camp Hell for the millionth time. And I love that I have this image of Vic to go along with the re-reading. He does scowl so beautifully, doesn't he?

And I just the bit at the beginning when he is so worried about Jacob finding his phone in the lettuce bin in the fridge and when they sit on the couch and Jacob lets him know that it is okay and that Jacob isn't grilling him and that Jacob trust him and the only response that Vic has is to gather Jacob's hand up in his and tuck it in under his chin.

That scene.

How can one not love every single bit of Vic because of that one scene?

Wow, I love that you have such a soft spot for Vic.

Vic and Jacob have the established-couple thing going on so it can be a challenge to find ways to demonstrate the evolution of their partnership.

Wow. I'm sorry about your problem but I'm also really pleased because I've been having the same issue, and now I kno it's not personal! And on older posts, too. I disabled comments on all of the older ones, and it does seem to have eased off (maybe they just moved over to you instead... :( ).

If it flares up again I'll also disable Anon posting. I already have moderation on Anon comments, but it means I have to clear the spam each day.

I raised a complaint with LJ but they just referred me to the post setting options *sigh*.

Can't they just go post about their Ugg boots on EACH OTHERS accounts and leave me alone???
Nov. 8th, 2012 04:22 pm (UTC)
but YES, the ugg boots are a common feature!! How weird is that? There's a story in that, as we say :)

ooooh, and it's seeping through to my Muse right now... *scribbles away*...
Nov. 8th, 2012 04:36 pm (UTC)
It is so disturbing what causes the muse to prick up its ears.

You could try to be less popular. :P I hardly get any spam.
Nov. 8th, 2012 01:20 pm (UTC)
I could come spam you.
Nov. 8th, 2012 01:46 pm (UTC)
If you spammed with the actual goods, and not links, I could take it. Well, not the boots--they are UGGly. :P

I saw a lady at the gym on the treadmill in uggs. Struck me as strange.
