Here's Puff Man posing with the proof copy of The Starving Years paperback that just came in the mail. I'm unhappy with the way the red color-shifted between RGB and CMYK colorspaces so I'll need to play with that. There is no red ink in 4-color process printing, it's made up of magenta and yellow. So that shift is to be expected.

Here I thought my big issue would be with the blacks. You need to be careful with oversaturating your cover with ink, so I broke up big fields of black by ghosting in another image that wraps around the back.

I love that one-eye-open thing Puffy does :D

Also, this is a honking big book.

Now that is one big, beautiful book! I sit here drooling I want it so much! Sometimes my ereader is just not enough, I have to have a hefty paper edition to cuddle up to once in a while.

I love the way you describe Javier and his blind eye. I have next to no sight in my right eye so I can easily relate to both the "clouds" and the flat, two dimentional vision Javier has. People coming up on me on the "wrong" side will just get no attention from me at all, and going to a 3D movie is just a waste of money.

I absolutely loved The Starving Years. Thank you!

Wow, I had no idea about your vision! Yesterday I was just discussing with a friend of mine who's going deaf the relative suckiness of losing hearing vs. sight. We both thought it would be way worse to not be able to see.

I think what I keep coming back to about Javier is that his damage is somewhat reversible but his family, who is wasting money left and right, refuses the surgeries. It's the great big price he now pays to be true to who he is. And he probably still thinks on some level he deserves it.

Besides from the not going to 3D movies I've only thought about my handicap once, while I was in art school. We were supposed to make a 1/4 copy of a classic greek statue. I had to walk up to that big, hunky delisiousness and touch him all over, so that I could get an idea of how his muscles were shaped. My statue came out kind of flat in the beginning but I eventually managed to get him right. None of the other students had to touch him to "see" him. I guess that's when I realised my vision was 2 dimentional.

I hope that Javier will come to accept his handicap, it is after all not the end of the world. I guess he's allowed to be angry at his family (his mother) for not giving him the money to get his eye fixed, but I think he'll wear his eye-patch with pride in the end. It is after all his proof that he's living his life the way he want's it. Not to mention Nelson being so turned on by his sexy pirate look. *LOL*

All the characters in this book are so facinating and so accomplished, I felt like I walked away from beloved friends when I finished reading. There's always the joy of re-reading it, and hugging a brand new paper edition if I ever get my hands on one, but do you think you'll ever write more about them?

I feel like they're my friends, too! Alas, their big story is done, and if I wrote more it would feel trumped-up and contrived.

I would love it if you could post a review on amazon - it totally doesn't need to be anything lengthy or fancy! I hate asking but I think there's probably a correlation with the fact that the top selling books in the genre have lots of reviews and mine that stay on the charts for just a day or two usually only have a handful :-/

I'll do that! I can probably just cut and paste my upcoming LJ ramblings about TSY all over the place: Amazon.com-.uk and even on Goodreads. And I'll encourage anyone that reads my LJ page to write a little something too. Not that there's that many people that read my page but you never know.

YOU TOTALLY ROCK! Thank you, I so appreciate it :D

I think I'm in the category of "target to insult to make oneself look like a big shot" these days on GR so I try to limit my viewing there.

Looks great but I can see where you'd be unhappy with the red. I can't wait to get my copies. Puff is mimicking Javier :o)

That Puff has no sense of propriety.

That is either a big book or a tiny kitty

Sadly, I'll have to wait with the reading, I REALLY need to get some of the books I already own read before buying new ones

*Scratches the kitty belly* just cause it's there ;)

Yay! I fixed the red issue...tomorrow I fix the stuff in the text block that I hate. Then I will probably compulsively read the whole thing again "just to be sure...."
Mar. 14th, 2012 11:15 pm (UTC)
Yay! If you need to read it again, please make it quick :D I don't mind the orangy red if it means I get it faster!

I fixed the orangey red! (And I felt like a Photoshop ninja doing it.) I installed a custom printer profile for the manufacturer and used a special proof-view where I could work in RGB but it would look like my CMYK output. Yay me! I had watched the video not long ago so I knew which part I needed to brush up on and implement.

I'll tackle the book block tomorrow. It looks weird.

Ha, Photoshop ninja :D At my work, the marketing department has been majorly stressed about the catalogue running late because of colour issues after multiple print proofs, so good on you for sorting things out!
Mar. 15th, 2012 01:46 pm (UTC)
When I worked in screenprinting I remember that red was always the hardest color to get right in 4-color process. We had this T-shirt with a hot air balloon with a big red swash down the front and we had to add a red spot-color to get it right.

Kitty belly!
I like the orange. :) And all pics gets better/more interesting with a kitty in them. ;)

Re: Kitty belly!
I was able to make the orange red like it's supposed to be :D

Man, everything's better with a big ol' kitty belly.

Re: Kitty belly!
I just love that Puff Man is the mirror image of Javier with the one eye thing. LOL! Plus, I absolutely love Javier. I really feel that he thinks he deserves it, and this was perhaps a whole lot of why he doesn't get the surgeries. Then, I wondered if maybe I was adding that in there myself. I see now you did intend me to think that. Yay!

Anyway, I am still slowly reading. I am allowed to soak up one chapter a day, though there have been a couple of days when I just couldn't keep my eyes open to read after the day was through. I am under some serious deadline weight just now. LOL! Tonight, I am allowed two more chapters, plus I am almost done. I might have to just suck it all up. Who knows! Thanks for the great read, yet again, Jordan. XOXO

Re: Kitty belly!
Oh and I like the orange red too!

Re: Kitty belly!
I think later in the book he specifically thinks he deserves it when he's trying to puzzle through his ex's moral character. Right and wrong are important yet difficult considerations for him, since sometimes the difference isn't obvious!

I like it red as well. ;)
