Unexpected warm snap

It's 49F here today - that's nuts. It's usually cold and snowy in Southern Wisconsin this time of year. But since I'm almost out of cat litter (and since I buy this specific wood-based type from the feed store that's convoluted to get) I decided to make my cat litter pilgrimage today. Then I decided the 40lb bags can probably live right next to my front door for right now, since I don't feel like carrying them any farther. Whew--it's such a big accomplishment. And yay, I don't need to think about it now for several more months.

The process involves going to the feed store, hoping the person at the register can find the obscure item in their system, (sometimes yes sometimes no depending on who's at the register...and I try to keep my receipt for next time but manage to lose it), pulling my car around to the supply sheds, and having a guy (who sometimes tries to give me the wrong thing) load them in. It went really well today, but not as well as last time, when my assistant was home from college and I just gave him thirty bucks and my car keys and had him go deal with it all for me. Including hauling the bags!

Anyway, if you have cats and you ever get dissatisfied with your cat litter, look into wood litter. It's renewable, compostable, biodegradable, controls odor phenomenally well, lasts a long time, and depending on where you buy it, cheap. I realize I live out in farm country so my resources aren't necessarily your resources...but man, I love this stuff.

I love Feline Pine, which is pretty much just sawdust. It's cheap, smells good, and works great. I don't think I could ever go back to the clay stuff. It's too heavy, smells nasty, and it was a chore to clean.

This stuff? Is awesome! Is yours a local brand?

It looks like it's the same as Feline Pine non-clumping, in that it's basically pelleted sawdust. I just took a peek, yes it's manufactured in-state, so that's probably why it's so inexpensive. http://www.marthwood.com/animal_bedding.html

We are using the litter made from corn for our cats. Tried some of the wood-based ones but they hated them.

Is it the kernel or the cob? I tried a corn cob bedding with them and they wouldn't go in it, just peed up the wood-filled box faster and left the corn cob untouched, except for a few experimental paw prints.

Blogging about cat-litter now? *LOL* Well, I don't think I can get the one you recommend up here on the rock where I live. I have to contend with the super-expensive "clumpy" sand that we're using right now. Bekka has decided that Lukas is to be an indoor cat. I absolutely HATE the litterbox. Yuck. The famous heated floors doesn't help much with the odor I can tell you.....

Lukas has been absolutely wild this week. There's a cat walking around our house and Lukas is in heat. He "talks" and cries and outright pleads when he sees this cat through the window. He has started spraying when he goes to pee, which leads me to two desitions:

1. The balls has got to go.
2. He needs a playmate.

Indoor neutered cats live a lot longer, so I'm sure you'll be happy to have Lukas with you that much longer!

My first cat sprayed something fierce. I hadn't had him neutered because he was FIV positive and I didn't want to risk the anesthesia, but the spraying got really bad and I found a specialist who would be very careful. The neutering helped a lot. Though I discovered some stray cat had sprayed on our back deck (specifically on the plastic grill cover, ew) and when I threw that out, the spraying decreased a bunch.

I'll call the vet first thing Monday morning. Right now the litter box has to stay in my shower......
Lukas acts like the horny teenager he is. I'v never had a cat try to hump my leg! But then again all my previous cats have been females.
I think I'll have to wait a bit before I get another kitty too. I'll be going away for three weeks this summer and finding a vacation home for one kitty is difficult enough.

Heh. There hasn't been a man in my life for the longest time. I guess the little furball thinks he's my boyfriend. XD
