I woke to a chirping at 3am. Now, my smoke alarm is hardwired into my house's electrical system and emits a BLAAAAAT that's loud enough to blow me out of bed. So I realized it was the carbon monoxide detector my ex's family had given us maybe five years ago.

My first thought as I handled it was, "So there could be carbon monoxide present and my response is to find the thing and take out the batteries." But I reasoned that when that chirp-thing happens, it just means the batteries are dying. Plus my furnace is only 2 years old and my stove and dryer are electric.

So as pissed as I was to be woken at 3am and awake until 5, I decided I could hardly fault the device. It's been working all these years--I frankly don't even know how many--without a problem. And really, most of my stuff is the same way. It just works, and I don't worry about it. I truly appreciate that.

I think it is almost instinctive to want to remove the batteries or chuck noisy things out of the window. Especially at 3am. Well done for being able to think so clearly!

I was really tempted to just ignore it. But it would have kept chirping.

It's strange how these things always happen at night when you're least equipped (mentally) to deal with them. I have three smoke detectors at home and they all ( of course, as they were all installed at the same time) beeping and complaining one after the other a couple of months ago. I admit I haven't changed the batteries yet. The truth? I used a broom and knocked them all down in a fit of sleep-deprived rage.

All three? Ha ha - I'm sorry I laughed out loud at that mental image...it sounded like something that would happen to Vic.

I figure if I sleep 7 or 8 hours a night, the chance of the batteries crapping out while I'm a sleep were one in three, so I can't spin a big worst-case-scenario out of it ;-)

The first one came down when I ripped out the battery after several tries to silence it. The next two were broomified. I absolutely HATE loosing sleep.
