Giveaway: Fire Thief

I'd been wondering if it was even worth producing short stories as standalone ebooks, but I took a little poll where a majority of respondants said, "Go for it!" And it looks like quite a few people are happy to grab Fire Thief! It appeared in an anthology a few years ago but I did a significant rewrite.

I really enjoyed re-editing and fleshing out this story. And of course doing the cover art! I've been studying my Photoshop. Though I've been using the program since 1999 there is always something new to learn.

I'll give away a copy of Fire Thief to a random commenter. Just leave a comment within 24 hrs.

ETA: Tam is the winner! Thanks all for commenting.

I read this story in the anthology, and loved it. A new improved version can only be good. I'm in. Thanx!

There seems to be a good market for short stories - I know that sometimes that's all I've got time for. I don't think I've read this one so I'm all for random freebies.

I've read the original story and I'd really like to read this new version. Please count me in.

I have to admit that I prefer novels over shorts stories but that's mostly because some of the shorts I've read we never good stories to begin with. I haven't read any of your shorts yet but I know I need to as they have been so highly rated. This would be a good first short to begin with ; )

Since I missed this in the original anthology, I'd love to read it now...so I'm definitely in! :)

Random.org picked #1! (Kind of funny, you don't see that picked much.) WTG, Tam!

Thanks, all, for the kind words :)

I'm the same with Photoshop - have been using since way back when it didn't have layers or history, (shudder) but keep finding new things about it. For example, I just now realized that if I change the color space to "lab color" I can manipulate the colors in a much more selective way. It's probably something I should have known, but didn't.

As for publishing short stories, I'm all for it.

The only thing I know about LAB color is that you can non-destructively switch between that and RGB back and forth as often as you like with no degradation. It never occurs to me to do so, though. There are a few things LAB is better for...it's making me crazy that I can't remember what they are!

(yay, advanced geekage.)
Dec. 18th, 2011 11:43 pm (UTC)
For one, you can adjust hue/saturation/lightness for six different colors individually, without effecting the others. I just started playing with it, but it can potentially make a huge difference.

This was the thing I was thinking of, using Lab mode to generate an accurate mask-

OH, I just remembered another one I used to use all the time in CS2. Sometimes the L channel from Lab mode makes a nice black and white conversion, specifically for the two-color separations for offset printing I used to do on my old job's newsletter, where I needed high contrast and a fairly big halftone dot. But now with CS5 there are more options for B&W conversion besides just "desaturate." Man, that was a long time ago! Ancient technology, too. They used to photograph my printed separations rather than accepting a digital file at the printer's.
