Gratitude #18 - smells

My schedule's a little weird today. I had some raw chicken, and the choice to either cook it early in the day or freeze it, so I'm slow-roasting it this morning, otherwise I won't get to it until Saturday. What a wonderful smell in my house!

I love smells. They're evocative of memories in a way I often can't put my finger on. But so often I just get a little whiff, and think, "Huh, Play-Doh" or some other specific and odd thing from my past.

I think I need to go get a whiff of some leather. Mmm.

Smell is indeed a powerful thing. In our house there wont be Christmas unless it smells of oranges and cinnamon. And Pinnekjøtt of course, which we eat for Christmas dinner. ( I feel sorry for the guys who're stuck with Lutefisk.)

PS: Loved Fire Thief. Who'd have guessed that blind men could make you spontaneously combust? There's a blind guy who takes the same bus as me and I tried to picture him in a purple coat, black lipstick and cool shades. No can do. He's small and round and he never wears sunglasses. He has worn the same green jacket for four years. He needs a stylist! And his designated driver is an equally rotund lab who gives me soulful looks from between the seats. I wish life could be a bit more like your books...*sigh*

I'm not a fan of lamb, but I'd much rather have that than Lutefisk! I live near a Norwegian-settled town where they sell Lutefisk and lefse.

Glad you liked Fire Thief! I enjoyed thinking about how Thomas would pick out his outfit. Would he get someone's reaction to it and then take it even more over the top? Does his designated driver tell him what looks good on him? Does he go by how it feels or smells? Who put his lipstick on him? (Probably Ashley). I think he has some sense that he's devastating and it pisses him off that he's being judged by a sense he doesn't possess. I also liked that Hank's know-it-all personality was what shone through for Thomas rather than superficial stuff, for all that he likes to dress up. I guess it's all ironic.

That happens to me all the time. It only freaks me out when its stagnant flower water or my mum's perfume.
