Rain and hail

It poured all night and now it's hailing. It's garbage day/recycle day, and I think I will just hold on to the wad of cardboard I've been dying to get rid of rather than attempting to somehow wrap it up, putting it out, and having it turn to mush. Or chasing the recycle guy down the street with it. Man, I'm betting he really doesn't care for his job on days like today.

But the rain on the roof gave me some pretty strange dreams--a variation on what I call my "big house" dream where I find additional rooms in my house that I've somehow failed to notice despite having lived there for years. In this one, my friend had a small outbuilding on his property, maybe the size of a coachhouse, that we had cleaned up and decided to use as a practice space for our new band. Then I noticed that one of the walls was damp and had taken on some water damage, and I asked him if he thought he could fix it and nail up some new drywall there.

When he touched the wall, it collapsed in to reveal a cavernous room beyond, with vaulted brick ceilings and a rosette stained glass window at the far end letting in light. My friend slid down the rubble, kind of like  a big slide since the floor was twenty feet down, and at the bottom he found all these dwarf fruit trees in half-barrel pots. He brought me up a pear. I (somehow) got down to the bottom and started going through the strange things there. Lots of stationery and cards along the edges, as if the place had been some sort of shop, and we found a handwritten record that we presumed to be of the previous owner's death, in the mid-eighties. I found it somewhat of a relief because I took it as a sign my friend owned the space free and clear if the previous owner was dead.

My friend is also a full-time writer...not sure if that has anything to do with anything.

Wow, that is a wacky dream. I've had those dreams too where it's your house but there are rooms you didn't know you had. Probably some universal meaning, like showing up at school naked. :-)

I swear the US is getting all the weird weather. We have t-shirt weather up here and I know they are saying more snow for places in the US at the end of the week. WTF?

Aaand now it's snowing.

But I did end up catching the recycle man with my cardboard ;-)

A good story
This sounds like the beginnings of a good story to me. Ghost of the dead owner, hidden treasure of historical significance, romance lost, romance found. The possibilities are endless. I love those kinds of dreams. :D

Re: A good story
My dreams make pretty crappy stories, ha ha! Maybe because they're kind of pointless and disappointing. Hemovore was the only story of mine that started with a dream, though it was more of a fleeting emotion, the thought of a vampire who just wanted to be left alone being flushed out of his lair.

I like the part that you were relieved that your friend owned the space free and clear. Dreams are so strange like that.

That's funny, I think it was a rather selfish reason I thought that, though. I was really enjoying our practice space!

I use to have dreams like that about my grandmother's house. I find new rooms and hidden treasure and sometimes also a hidden garden behind the hedge lining her property. She was a keen gardener and had one of the most beautiful gardens in our neighborhood. I love it when I have dreams like that and I'm usually a bit miffed when I wake up because I want it to be real. It also helps that she's usually alive in those dreams....

I love having dreams about my grandmother's house. Sometimes I dream I inherited it. (Actually my family sold it before she died.)

I feel pretty miffed when I wake up, too, because I'm usually so excited about the new rooms or furniture or appliances I've found. I find some pretty spectacular kitchens.

I seem to do most of my treasure hunting in the basement. Sometimes there's rooms and rooms that no one ever saw before, and sometimes there's hidden passages behind the walls. My grandmother was a rich lady of good standing, and the house used to be filled with lots of interesting things. I think the sale of the house was almost as tragic to me as my grandmothers death. I loved that house. :(
If I ever win the lottery I'll buy it back!

My grandmother's basement was special to me for different reasons. My uncle, who fished, used to clean fish on a card table in the basement and I hung out with him and chatted while he did it. They used their basement a lot but it was never a "finished" area of the house. I wonder why? (Maybe because the attic was finished and they figured that was enough.) I had friends with rec rooms in the basement and I was always a bit envious of that.

"Exploring the basement" seems to be a symbol for mucking around in the subconscious, doesn't it? Though I suppose maybe that's too obvious.

I can't remember the last time measurable precipitation fell. It's been ages.

What a crazy elaborate dream!

It rained all night, snowed all day yesterday, and was still snowing today. I think we needed the rainfall, but not all at once.

I get big house dreams too - I think they must have something to do with how our brains store memories - a visual filing system perhaps.

Wish I could discover a couple of extra rooms in my current house. It's feeling way too small right now. Extra windows to cope with the dark would be very welcome too.

I read some theories that dreams are about the brain sorting out what will go in long-term memory and what can be discarded. Sometimes they seem more magical than that, though.

I think I'm happy with my amount of space but I'd like more storage.
