Ebay weirdness

So in my quest to get rid of things I don't use, I nearly gave away a little piece of musical equipment on Freecycle, but then I quickly googled it and saw it had some "vintage" appeal (how sad, my early days are now vintage) and opted to clean it up and list it on eBay instead. (Cleaning up any kind of musical equipment is just nasty. They get some serious grunk on them.)

I listed it maybe an hour ago, and someone PM'ed me with this:
i'm interested in your [equipment name]. if you shoot me a fair price, i can send the payment direct to your pay-pal account. let me know. thanks.

Well, no. I put it up for a 10-day AUCTION just about AN HOUR AGO to see how much I could get for it, duh.

This is exciting. Makes me think I'll make a few bucks on it. Maybe "a fair price" is more than I'd thought! New ones are going for $90 so I'll be happy to get $100 for vintage--I imagine that's what it went for when my mom bought it for me when I was a teenager.

My biggest eBay success story was a weaving book I bought for a dollar and sold for maybe $75 because it was out of print. But nowadays people flock to used booksales with barcode scanners to cash in on rare books. It was just serendipity on the weaving book; I knew the press was a good press for fiber arts and the book looked nice to me.

My friend Intrepid Amy (who you may recall from the abandoned house and cheese factory field trips) used to work at the Gap where they were supposed to buy new clothes every season, and she ended up selling all her clothes for as much as she paid for them, or more, on eBay.

I've got a friend who does lots of eBaying and she's always complaining about emails from people just like the one you describe, who don't seem to get that it's an auction as opposed to just being listed for sale. Drives her mad.

Yes, I totally get where your friend is coming from! Duh, I just listed it, if I knew how much I could get for it, I'd ask!

On the other hand, in my jovial mood tonight, I've decided to think, "Yippee, that's an in-demand item!"

I've never made much money on e-bay. There are always people who try to circumvent the system. It's like people who show up at your garage sale 90 min. before the appointed time and start pawing through your boxes hoping to get something really cheap before anyone else shows up. Hope you get some good money for it.

My ex does however more or less make his living using e-bay, but it's a formal "store" not just random junk from his house. LOL

My girlfriend just emailed me to ask if I wanted to "do" the local village-wide garage sale, and I needed to clarify if she meant to sell tihngs with her or just go shop, 'cos selling things is a pain in the butt!

I don't usually make much money from ebay. That one book is the exception. I am always pleased to see my item go to someone who wants it, though. I think in terms of hanging onto possessions that aren't doing me any good, the notion of someone wanting/ needing/ using it more than I do, than I might ever do, is very helpful in me letting go.

And again, I must reiterate, yes you can walk through my house, no I'm not a hoarder :D

I used to study Astrology with a guy who was a paper hoarder and it was really freaky when I saw his apartment.

Here's hoping you get a fine price for it!! Hmm, that person who emailed you directly should be reported to ebay, because that's against their terms of service...

I was thinking that too but I didn't feel like being the morality police, you know? It's just too draining. He ended up being the first bidder when I didn't reply to him, and like 14 people are watching it which is more than I've ever had. So we'll see. I sprang the extra 40¢ for a 10-day option so it'll be up there a while.
