Packing Heat 120: Owning Creativity

Packing Heat is a podcast I've been putting out since 2007. My goal is to help other writers stay motivated, and to encourage them to take their writing to the next level. You don't need special gadgets to listen; Packing Heat plays in your browser, like YouTube. Or you can subscribe (and leave me glowing feedback) at iTunes!

Is Fun Overrated?

I’m back from Photoshop World! I recorded a podcast there, however it’s probably for the best that I’ve lost the files. I sounded a bit tweaked at the time.

Las Vegas bills itself as fun place, but I wouldn’t exactly classify my time there as “fun.” However, I didn’t go there to have fun. I went there to take classes and have experiences. My 2-1/2 hour bus ride to the Clark County Museum is a prime example. Was it enjoyable to deal with the bus driver who pulled over and freaked out because her windshield wiper broke? No. It was nerve-wracking. But I learned in a very direct way about the manner in which environment affects behavior. If it seldom rains in your setting, then your characters will make a big deal out of it when it does rain!

Owning Creativity

In another milestone in awkwardness, I attended a workshop in which everyone was made to say, “I am creative,” and then have the nervous titter that followed pointed out to us. (Nice.)

The experience did get me to thinking about how loaded the word “creativity” is, and how many of us have been trained to not say it about ourselves. I think “creativity” lives on too high of a pedestal, and much of it is actually a combination of persistent work and thoughtful analysis, both of which are learnable.
