Packing Heat 118: The Stuck Day

Packing Heat is a podcast I've been putting out since 2007. My goal is to help other writers stay motivated, and to encourage them to take their writing to the next level. You don't need special gadgets to listen; Packing Heat plays in your browser, like YouTube. Or you can subscribe (and leave me glowing feedback) at iTunes!

Today I’m checking in with all of you throughout my writing day to talk about my attempts to work through this part of my story that’s just not flowing!

8:00 am

Well, it’s a little bit early in the morning for me, I usually record my podcast later in the day, but I’m stuck on a project, and I thought it would be really interesting if I could sort of  talk through this “stuckness” so that other writers could see what methods I’m going to use, and we can figure out what’s going to work for me.

I know it’s not like an internal resistance to writingthat’s got me stuck right now because I really want to write this scene…

12:30 pm

So, first of all, I took some of my own advice from last week and I found a notepad and I put it next to my keyboard, and as I was stuck I was like, “Okay, I just need to say what they’re both feeling.” So I wrote a little paragraph about what each of them were feeling, and okay, that was great. I went back to writing, and I found that the way the were feeling wasn’t informing the scene…

4:30 pm

All right, I’m back, checking in again. I’ve written for a few hours, I think about three hours, and what I initially wrote…you know, I wrote for a while and then I just suddenly hated it….

Hopefully I fixed whatever was broken in my story and I will now be on track to finish this elusive thing! I hope hearing me try to handle the weirdness will give you some inspiration the next time you’re feeling like those words are just not flowing.

No assignment this week. Go write!

No assignment this week. Go write!
I'm editing, does that count ;o)

If you say it counts for you, then it does!

It doesn't "count" for me since new wordcount is so important for a slower writer like me, and editing comes from a different part of my brain, but it may very well "count" for you!

Well normally I'd say it doesn't, since we mostly just have comma issues. But this time we had to rewrite a scene a bit.
