I've made contact!

For a few months now, I've been really bummed out by my desk. It's a vintage thing I found at Goodwill, and I love it with all its dings and scuffs, but the surface of the desktop was so nasty that I hated even putting my hand on it. (It was kind of rough and flaky, really bad.)

I wanted an easy way to refinish it that didn't involve stripping or sanding, and I researched chemicals that might do that, but I came to the conclusion that living in an apartment like I do, chemically refinishing the desk was impossible, as well as too time consuming, plus it would likely destroy one of the wall-to-wall carpets no matter how I tried to protect it.

I found some scrap linoleum in the Magic Dumpster where I find all kinds of things. I cut it to size and laid it down, and that sort of worked, except the edge felt terrible on my hand while I was typing or mousing. And taping it all around with duct tape seemed like a future-goopy solution, and depressingly ugly to boot.

And then I realized...CONTACT PAPER.

Ta-da, it came out fantastic. Plus it only cost a dollar. Plus the roll was the EXACT WIDTH of my desk. Fixes don't get much better than that!

Even the dollar store had several decent patterns. I actually bought this roll for something else but I really like it here.

I was pretty jazzed when I saw it was the exact width of the desk!

Thanks! :D It's funny when something needs six months to percolate and only 15 minutes to implement.

That is such a brilliant fix! I have a desk with a really rough surface, which while pretty to look at is annoying as ef. Imma steal your idea.

(Also, your desk is unnaturally tidy. Even after I've tidied, my desk is never that tidy.)

It only looks like that because I've just set it up! It'll develop that lived-in look soon.

Oh, and if you steal the idea, there's a trick to putting the paper down straight. Tear the backing off of *half* the paper only so you're not struggling with a long thing getting stuck to itself. Do most of the positioning and figuring with the backed half, holding up the sticky half with your other hand. Then when you have it right where you want it, roll the sticky half down.

Once that looks good, fold over the remaining half, peel off that backing and stick it down. (Sorry if this is "duh" but I could see where I'd probably never get the thing on correctly if it was all sticky all at once.)
