happy photoshop accident

I was just using this random photo from my computer to follow along a tutorial on Lynda.com about selecting hair...but I ended up giving the picture a bunch more depth. Accidentally, kind of.

When I first selected the hair, it had whiteish edges, because the original background of the model was white, and I wanted to place it on a red background. So I thought, well, what if I just darken the edges of the pixels once I select it.

But I don't have my tablet hooked up to this computer yet (long story, but I swapped the computers in my house a couple weeks ago when one started acting funny and I couldn't afford a meltdown) and so I was just burning in the edges with big strokes of my mouse...and I realized I'd really improved the midtones in the model's complexion! The original was so small and low-res, it was kind of hard for me to miss any parts of his face with my broad mouse-strokes.

So hit the whites of his eyes with a little dodging, softened the skin a bit, and now I kind of like him. I was trying to get better at selecting hair...and I ended up getting better at making a washed-out model have more midtone depth.

(I got sloppy selecting the hair down around the collar, I know. This is just a quickie practice.)

Is it just me or does his left eye seem HUGE. It's freaking me out. The hair looks fine. Can you photoshop that beard (and I use the term loosely) off of him? Sheesh, everyone's a critic huh?

Oh yeah, the eye mismatch is a very common thing for photo-retouchers to fix...and I actually know a really good way to correct it, which I've needed to use on book covers. But I'd rather leave him staring at you with one big eye, heh heh heh....

I don't mind the beard thing at that length. But when I guy has a beard like that and it's LONG, I find that a bit icky.

And your quickie practice is still a heckuva lot better than a lot of book covers I've seen.......

Thank you!

There is one publisher that I suspect the artist is colorblind, seriously.

But I invest heavily in my training--not just money but time--and I suspect a lot of people think they can half-ass it. Or they don't realize the value of training. Or something.

At my old day job, I had a superior who'd get angry because I couldn't just tell her which font to use...it was hard to explain that the choice was a distillation of all my schooling and all my experience and my opinion, etc. But it does make sense that you can't distil the school and the training down to a sentence. It's a sensibility.

I reckon you did a great job. I just don't have the patience or the know how or the patience to learn about things like that.

The model is kinda cute, too.

He is cute. I had him on the hard drive because I liked his hair.

He looks much better with healthier looking skintone. And the hair looks good against the red (ignoring the neck area ;)). I tried to do hair-end retouches years ago and it was very fiddly. I ended up with square hair and a very painful right hand from mousing.

Square Hair sounds like a band name! It's easier to select hair these days but sometimes there's only so much you can do with the existing photo.
