Rewards

OK, it was my first day back at the day job in forever and...crap, can I even do this? I want to stay home!

I made myself get up early and write, then go grocery shopping, then the day job 9-5, then the chiropractor at 7:45 pm (but I'm betting I won't get out of there 'till 9. He was at a conference so I'll bet he's all backed up.) OK, I just rescheduled and feel somewhat LESS like a headless chicken :P

I am trying to tell myself that working outside the home refills the well of my experience so that I actually have things to write about. Lawrence Block likens writing to being on a raft and burning the timbers of your experience one by one to fuel your stories. Eventually you'll run out of raft to cannibalize, and you add timbers to your raft by going out and doing stuff. Well, he said it better.

I wish I had a good non-food, cheap or free reward to give myself on a day that I successfully navigate work. Maybe it's something as small as being able to yell "ta-da" when I get home. Writing my daily word count on a calendar has really increased my word count quite a bit. A special cup of tea is my reward for blogging regularly. There's got to be something similar for showing up at the job. (Maybe just a box of tea at work.)
